The fashion-conscious fairies of Rainbow’s Winx Club are ready for their big-screen close-up. It was announced this week that the Rome, Italy-based Rainbow is producing a CG-animated feature based on the property, slated for a holiday 2007 release date.

With an estimated budget of 25 million euros ($34.13 million), the feature is titled Winx Club: The Secret of a Kingdom (Winx Club, il Segreto di un Regno). RAI Fiction and RAI Cinema will be co-producing with Rainbow.
The feature will be directed by Rainbow CGI founder Iginio Straffi, who co-created the series with Cristiana Magrini and Andrea Pulito. It will follow the adventures of the five teenage fairies who band together against evil witches bent on destroying their club. The picture’s budget is estimated to be the highest ever for an Italian-made animated film.
Since its premiere on RAI 2 in Italy in January 2004, Winx Club has been broadcast on cable and satellite networks all over the world. In the U.S., it airs on 4Kids TV on FOX. 4Kids holds the licensing rights to the show and has licensed the Winx Club name and image to a wide variety of children’s apparel and books.
