The Tramp was Charlie Chaplin's sixth film for Essanay Studios in 1915.

Directed by Chaplin, it was the fifth and last film made at Essanay's Niles, California studio. The Tramp marked the beginning of The Tramp character most known today, even though Chaplin played the character in earlier films.

This film marked the first departure from his more slapstick character in the earlier films, with a sad ending and showing he cared for others, rather than just himself. The film co-stars Edna Purviance as the farmer's daughter and Ernest Van Pelt as Edna's father. The outdoor scenes were filmed on location near Niles

Chaplin’s principal character, and one of the screen’s most famous icons, is the Tramp. In this Essanay short, the Tramp’s character is developed to encompass the pathos—as well as the comedy—for which Chaplin is celebrated. When a farmer’s pretty daughter (Purviance) is set upon by thieves, Charlie comes to her rescue, is given work on the farm, and dreams of making it his home.

Subject: chaplin is 'god'

it's hard to review a Chaplin film with anything lower than a 3. seriously, the man was a genius. this is a good, solid movie with classic slapstick and premise made famous by Chaplin.

Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp will appear in his movies for the next 25 years as America's favorite movie star. More than just a comical character. Chaplin creates his own world, but reacts to events. He belongs to the 19th century in his ideas. But in the early 20th century, in his films, he plays the little man against the malevolent odds. The outsider fighting oppressive villains. He was the comedy of expression, specializing in minute perfection and precision. He alternated comedy and evoked pity and compassion.
