The DepartedCritics laud 'Departed,' 'Dreamgirls'
January 15, 2007
Proud Chicago native Jennifer Hudson continued her seemingly unstoppable advance toward both a Golden Globe win tonight and an expected Oscar nomination Jan. 23 by winning the critics' best supporting actress award for ''Dreamgirls.'' Other ''Dreamgirls'' awards included Eddie Murphy for best supporting actor, best song for Beyonce's ''Listen,'' and best soundtrack. ''Little Miss Sunshine'' won for best acting ensemble, best screenplay, and took best young actor and young actress honors for Paul Dano and Abigail Breslin. The presumed Oscar frontrunners -- Helen Mirren (''The Queen'') and Forest Whitaker (''The Last King of Scotland'') -- continued on a roll, winning as best actor and best actress. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was ''Borat'' grabbing the best comedy trophy -- and star Sacha Baron Cohen showing up as himself, not his iconic faux-Kazakhstan journalist, as he has on earlier occasions. Accepted his prize, Cohen quipped, ''I'd like to thank everyone who decided not to sue us,'' a reference to the various lawsuits filed by people upset by being fooled into appearing in the film and believing it was a real documentary. Among the other nominees and presenters on hand for the star-studded fete at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium were Clint Eastwood -- whose ''Letters From Iwo Jima'' won best foreign language film -- Steven Spielberg, Penelope Cruz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sienna Miller, Greg Kinnear, Ryan Gosling, Maria Bello, Marcia Gay Harden, Cuba Gooding Jr., Melissa Etheridge, Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen, Djimon Hounsou, Christian Slater and Alan Arkin. As has been the case the past few years, a funny highlight of the evening included the ''In Memorium'' segment. But instead of reprising the usual rundown of entertainment luminaries who passed on in 2006, the Broadcast Film Critics Association focused on movies that died at the box office -- including ''Snakes on a Plane,'' ''Poseidon'' and ''The Lady in the Water'' (redubbed ''Dead in the Water'').
SPECIAL OSCAR NIGHT: The supporters of the award-winning Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire will be happy to learn the theater's production of ''Big River'' will be featured on Barbara Walters' annual pre-Academy Awards special. Footage of that show will be seen as Walters interviews Jennifer Hudson, who appeared in that 2001 production, along with Felicia Fields -- currently starring in the national tour of ''The Color Purple.'' • Speaking of Oscar, one of the good local area Academy Awards parties will be ''An Evening With the Stars'' at NBC Tower, benefitting Cure Autism Now. Hosted by WMAQ-Channel 5's Zoraida Sambolin, the evening will feature a new documentary on the life of Ben Royko, the autistic grandson of the legendary Mike Royko. Auction items have been received from Jenny McCarthy, whose son is also autistic; Nancy Sinatra autographed a pair of leather boots; Ivanka Trump sent a poster size autographed print of herself, her father and her brother, Donald Jr. The event's honorary committee includes Aaron Freeman, Jeff Garlin, Tim Kazurinsky, Harold Ramis and Joe Mantegna and Aidan Quinn -- who both have children with autism. The Departed is set in South Boston, where the state police force is waging war on organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan ... all » (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy is quickly gaining Costello’s confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there’s a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy – and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself |
