Learn The Film Movie Industry
By Phil Guie Dateline : Thursday, January
11, 2007
You don't need a college degree to get a job in
the film industry.
But according to Trayce Gardner, the founder and
director of the Brooklyn Young Filmmakers Coalition (BYFC), you do need to
be passionate, sociable, and have some grasp of the movies as a medium.
With that, anyone interested in working in the
industry, even those with little knowledge regarding the language of film
or what the filmmaking process entails, may want to attend BYFC's
"Inside Man" Conference at Long Island University this
Saturday.
The daylong event begins with a screening of Spike
Lee's film of the same name, followed by a discussion of different film
careers as well as how to appreciate the movies.
BYFC, like the Mayor's Office of Film's "Made
In N.Y." program sponsored by Brooklyn Workforce Initiatives,
educates working-class people on how to find jobs as production assistants
(P.A.'s), considered starting-level in the industry.
However, while a Brooklyn Workforce Initiatives
representative will be on hand at the "Inside Man"
conference,
Gardner said BYFC's program differs because it
urges people to enter the industry as unpaid workers.
Working unpaid on low-budget shoots, she stressed,
allows the individual more opportunities to interface with the project. In
other words, they can learn more and socialize with many more kinds of
people. "Film is the largest creative art, but it's also the largest
collaborative art," Gardner pointed out.
For the past seven years, the mission of BYFC, a
not-for-profit organization headquartered in Fort Greene, has been helping
individuals break into the city's ever-growing entertainment industry.
Through connections to the New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA)
Resident Employment Services and The Workforce Development Center at NYC
College of Technology, they offer an alternative to traditional film
school, focusing on training for more supportive roles.
Saturday's conference, open to all New York City
residents, extends a curriculum that costs much less than NYU or Columbia,
and focuses on more practical matters. As far as the quality of training,
Gardner said their "Intro to P.A." class effectively teaches
students about different departments in any given film shoot, and how they
relate to the production as a whole.
Gardner implied that either path has its own
particular strengths and disadvantages. "There's a lot to be gotten
from a college education," she said, "but we're saying you can
take one class instead of a full degree and then learn on-the-job, [and
that] on-the-job experience can move your career."
She stressed that it takes time to become a paid
P.A., but that getting one's feet wet quickly is especially important. To
that end, attendees of the "Inside Man" conference also get
exposure to professional film editors, hair and make-up artists, and art
department specialists - places where a little P.A. experience can lead.
For Gardner, who got her own start as a P.A. on
huge, union-level music videos, networking was a constant refrain with
regards to how one attains work in film. "Most jobs are gotten two
ways:
The internet, or who you know," she said.
"So a P.A. that goes to another shoot can recommend you. It's really
about developing your networks on shoots."
In her opinion, the current lack of minorities in
the city's film industry - a statistic being addressed by the newly formed
Mayor's Task Force on Diversity in Film, Television and Commercial
Production - reflects a dearth of knowledge in working-class minority
communities - both in networking and where to look for
entertainment-related jobs.
Many working-class people of color, she said, may
not even know that film crews extend beyond writers and directors.
"What we're saying is, if you want to
increase diversity, there are always those who were struck in the gut,
want to do film and find it however they can," she said. "[But]
we need widespread education, including how to connect in the
industry."
"Inside Man" Conference: Getting
Started in Careers in Film is scheduled for Saturday, January 13th, 2007
from 10:00 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus
located at Flatbush & Dekalb Ave. $20 admission before Jan. 12th, $25
at the door. |
