He is so much in demand in the Hollywood studios as a tuba player (plus his recent invention, the Fluba, a combination flugelhorn and tuba) that he has been heard on over 1,200 sound tracks! That was his tuba that projected those five galactic tones from the mothership in “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.” …Self swings his fanny off…and wait until you hear the sheer beauty of his tuba on “I Loves You Porgy”… some tubists get their highs with lows….the entire mood is one of reverential jazz” (from liner notes by Harvey Siders) Jim has brought together a “who's who” of L.os Angeles' top studio musicians for a classy, elegant recording of 10 great jazz tunes arranged by busy movie orchestrator Brad Dechter. Each of the three session featured a great saxophonist and separate rhythm section playing with Self on three tunes. The first with Gary Foster, (who's played and recorded with everyone) has Terry Trotter, piano, Tom Warrington, Bass and Steve Houghton, drums. The second, featuring Pete Christlieb (of Tonite Show Band fame) has Tom Ranier, piano, Dave Carpenter, bass and Steve Schaeffer, drums. The final session was with Dan Higgins, (famous for his alto work on John Williams' score for “Catch Me If You Can') is with Mike Lang, piano, Ken Wild; bass and Ralph Humphrey , drums. Harpist Gayle Levant is also featured. All these forces were blended with the Jay Rosen Strings by Academy Award winning engineer, Shawn Murphy. Standards like “There Is No Greater Love”, “Pensativa”, and “No More Blues” share the CD with last year's Grammy winning Best Jazz tune, Herbie Hancock's “Speak Like a Child”, originals by Self, “That Morning in May”, and Dechter:, “The Underdog Has Arisen” and Horace Silver's “Strollin'”-- which features everyone. ”InnerPlay”is not just an album it is a work of art. HIGGINS first distinguished himself as an
outstanding saxophonist while attending University of North Texas. He played
lead alto in the 1 o'clock lab band and can be heard on Lab 76 and Lab 77. He
taught both saxophone and improvisation and was a member of the 1976 State
Department tour to Russia. Dan also was a recent guest at the University of
North Texas lecture series and played in the Alumni All-Star Reunion Band.
