Artisan Bronze foundry in Oxnard uses wax method to make sculptureWhen the wax melted out of the clay, hot liquid metal was poured into the cavity. The mold was broken after the metal cooled, creating the first bronze casting. Despite the passage of time, bronze casting methods have largely remained the same. Today, artists pursue their bronze vision at a foundry. Artisan Bronze uses the “lost wax” technique in a nondescript industrial area in Oxnard. The sound of air compressors and the glow of hot blowtorches emanate from a giant garage door facing a parking area filled with huge chunks of metal, giant statues under construction and containers full of raw metals. Inside, workers in full bodysuits, medical masks and protective eyewear make bronze sculptures. The shop specializes in forming objects out of bronze and aluminum for commissioned artists and just about anybody who wants one. Many larger pieces run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The foundry calculates a price estimate for the amount of raw materials and work involved in creating a piece. One project of note was a massive statue of Ronald Reagan on horseback for a park in his hometown of Dixon, Ill. Huge commissions from internationally known sculptors have been displayed in modern art museums throughout the world, and the foundry’s work has been featured in the magazine Artforum. Shop owner Robert Wenzke has been doing bronze work for more than 25 years. Artisan Bronze is regarded as one of the top foundries in the United States, with a track record of large, successful projects. Wenzke’s expertise is sought out by wide array of artists who bring in clay models of their objects, small scale versions or even drawings. In addition to four full-time artisans at the shop, a member of the Wenzke family is usually casting, shaping, returning phone calls or helping to build. Robert’s wife, Helen, and their children, Carroll, Marissa and Chris, all pitch in. “Even though I’m here all the time, I love this business,” said Carroll Wenzke, 19. “I mean, how many jobs do you have where you can set your own hours, meet with clients and do something creative like this.” Robert Wenzke said Carroll has been around plaster and bronze since he was a kid. Like many creative art forms, becoming a master bronze artisan takes a ton of skill gained through experience. “He’s got about four more years before he’s really on top of it,” Wenzke said, “but he’s getting there.” |
