Network superstars the Powerpuff Girls have undergone "transcreation,"
a process that adapts American characters to a new audience. In this case,
Japan. The big-eyed, bubble-headed trio of crime busting preteens is now
full-bodied, although the Powerpuff Girlsstill have enormous eyes and
color coordinated outfits. In order to suit the taste of Japanese anime fans,
schoolgirl style micro-miniskirts replace their banded rectangular dresses.
Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls, drew the original
characters à la anime style. However, the initial Japanese release of the
series in 2001 was not a hit, so the series has gone back to the drawing board,
and the Powerpuff Girls' new image is even more Japanese, which has
translated into more sex appeal. Not only has the style changed, but the content
has a distinctive Japanese flavor. The source of the girls' superpower is a
radioactive ricecake instead of the "sugar and spice" of the American
version. Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z has been on air for over a year,
and has finally become popular in Japan among both young girls and older otaku.
